Operation Smile mission, Haiphong, Vietnam

This week international children’s medical charity Operation Smile is carrying out 15 missions around Vietnam, to celebrate 20 years since they first began working in the country. As accredited photographer for the organisation, I’m covering the activities at the Haiphong Medical University Hospital, about 100km from Hanoi on the Gulf of Tonkin coast.

175 potential patients were screened over the weekend, for suitability for surgery. Of those, 150 have been cleared and are now in the process of settling into the wards, going through the OR, recovering for a day or two back in the wards, and eventually heading home to a whole new existence.
